Fringe Gig: The Sandringham Hotel, Newtown, Thursday 23rd Sept
We’re headlining once again, this time at a gig presented by The 2010 Sydney Fringe Festival at the Sandringham Hotel, 387 King St Newtown, NSW, 2042. We’ll be joined on stage once again by regular collaborator Joe Cummins (The Splinter Orchestra) on trumpet and Kaoss, and Aemon Webb (Varlets, Nhomea) on drums.
Sharing the bill will be Violence in Action, a massive John Zorn inspired, improvised yet conducted game piece collective founded by Lachlan Kerr and featuring members from Godswounds, Darth Vegas, Squid, Ebolie, Shanghai, Slimey Things, Telafonica and more.
Also supporting are the enigmatic folk rock and punk act The Effing Seas, and psych pop 4 piece from Wollongong Ye Luddites.
Shoji Hano at The Now Now
Japanese drummer Shoji Hano completely blew me away last night at a Now Now gig in the Big Room, Newtown. Playing a blistering solo set, his intensity, passion, power and technique left me a little deaf but happy. Check out his website www.shojihano.com. Two laptop acts followed him – one a duo comprising Ben Byrne and Ivan Lysiak playing choppy crunchy sounds, the other Gilles Aubry from Berlin playing field recordings overlaid with some pretty harsh and torturous drones.
